Further information

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a fertility treatment which consists of a series of complex procedures for achieving pregnancy. It is a type of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART).

In an IVF procedure, the egg of a woman is fertilised with the sperm in a laboratory. Both egg and sperm are retrieved from the respective couple or donor and they are fertilised in a controlled environment. Once the egg is fertilized, it is inserted into the uterus of the woman where it grows into a baby.

You may need IVF for the following reasons:

  • Ovulation Disorders
  • Endometriosis
  • Uterine Fibroids
  • Impaired production of sperm or its function
  • A genetic disorder
  • Previous tubal removal or sterilization
  • Unexplained fertility

IVF is one of the most effective infertility treatments out there. However, it can’t be guaranteed that an IVF procedure will work at its first try. If you are looking to achieve pregnancy via IVF you may have to try for a couple of times for a successful outcome.

IVF success rates depend on various factors. One of the major ones being the woman’s age. It has been found that as a woman grows older the chances of success of IVF also declines. As you grow older, the quality of your egg declines which can make it hard for the fertilisation to occur and also make it difficult for the fertilised egg to implant in the uterus.

A failed fertilisation or implantation can result in a failed IVF. Hence, depending on the age of the woman whose eggs are being used, IVF success rates may differ.

Chances of pregnancy in One IVF cycle V/S Chances of pregnancy in multiple IVF cycles

The chances of a particular thing happening is always better when you give it multiple chances. The same can be said for a fertility treatment like IVF as well.

Per cycle, a woman has a chance of 20 to 35% chance of a successful pregnancy after the first IVF cycle. However, studies have shown for a successful pregnancy a woman have the best chance in 3 IVF cycles.

According to the Nationa Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), UK, the cumulative effect of 3 full IVF cycles increases the chances of pregnancy by 45 to 53%. Hence NICE recommends 3 IVF cycles as it is cost-effective and offers the best chance for women around the age of 40.

There are many women who do get pregnant after their first IVF cycle. However, in order to give you the best chance of getting pregnant you can go through 3 IVF cycles.

Factors affecting IVF success rates

As mentioned earlier, the success of IVF depends on various factors. Some of them are mentioned below.

As mentioned before, it is one of the most important factors for the success of IVF. With age the quality of egg decreases which can affect the outcome of the IVF process.

Cause of infertility:

The cause of your infertility can also have a considerable impact on the outcome of IVF treatment. Some of the infertility issues that can affect an IVF cycle are:

Tubal factor:

If your fallopian tubes are blocked then it can restrict the fertilisation of the egg by the sperm. However, it is possible to unblock the fallopian through surgery. Hence if you have this issue, you will first have to go through a surgery and then IVF will procedure will be done.

PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome):

PCOS is a hormonal disorder in which you may suffer from irregular periods. It has been seen that PCOS can affect IVF treatment. However, if the condition is mild to moderate successful results can be expected from the treatment.

Endometrial Causes:

The endometrium is the lining of the uterus. You can imagine it as the wallpaper of the uterus. It is an important part of women’s reproductive system. If the endometrium is thin or infected it may influence the results of IVF.

Uterine Factor:

The condition of the uterus is also a factor for influencing the IVF results. If your uterus has cysts, polyps, fibroids, etc they can affect the outcome. However, the results vary from person to person.

Male Factor:

If your male partner has some fertility issues then it can also affect IVF treatment. If the abnormalities are mild to moderate, the treatment can still give positive result. However, if the abnormalities are severe then advance techniques like IMSI (intracytoplasmic morphologically selected sperm injection) and ICSI (Intracytoplasmic sperm injection) has to be used.

Other Medical Illness:

Illness like hypertension, tuberculosis, obesity, diabetes, addiction to substances like drugs, alcohol and smoking may also interfere with the treatment.

Selecting the right IVF clinic for the best chance of successful IVF cycles

There are thousands of IVF clinics in India. Many of them claim to provide the best IVF success rates in their region. However, before selecting a clinic make sure you go through their websites or visit the clinic personally for a better understanding of their work.

Try selecting a clinic which has experienced IVF doctors. It should also have the latest technology required to give positive results. Some clinics also provide pregnancy care also after the procedure. Finding such a clinic will be an extra advantage.
