Further information

The use of ultrasound imaging for regional anesthesia is an emerging and important field in anesthesiology.  It can improve  the quality, success rate, and safety of regional blocks.

The use of ultrasound allows real time visualization of the nerves and the surrounding structures with real time guidance prior to advancing the needle and visual confirmation of the local anesthetic spread around the nerve.  Initial studies and results suggest that ultrasound guidance may decrease latency and improve success rates, eliminating or reducing serious complications.

Past participant evaluations and community physician annual needs assessment have indicated the need for cutting edge information about ultrasound guided regional anesthesia techniques. The course is designed to change physician competence in areas identified in the needs assessments, including selection of treatments for acute pain management.

This one-day workshop will specifically address these identified educational needs and provide practitioners with state-of-the art tools to provide improved treatment options for their patients. Faculty presenting and interacting with participants at this activity have been selected on the basis of their comprehensive clinical experience and academic excellence.

Objectives

At the end of the program, participants should be able to:

  •   Discuss the significance of ultrasound reflection, refraction, and attenuation and their importance in tissue echogenicity
  •   and  nerve imaging
  •   Demonstrate expertise adjusting the focus, frequency, depth and gain on the ultrasound machine
  •   Discuss the indications and contraindications for peripheral nerve blocks
  •   Identify important anatomic structures of the back, upper extremity and lower extremity using the ultrasound transducer.
  •   Important structures include bone, muscles, blood vessels, nerve plexuses and peripheral nerves
  •   Identify 5 common acoustic artifacts
  •   Describe 2 examples of sonopathology
  •   Demonstrate proficiency in ultrasound scanning technique and image optimization
